Title : Fixing shadows : still photography
Fixing Shadows is an online album of photographs collected by the Department of Anthropology at the University of Virginia. The site has two concerns, namely the subjects of images and their creators. The subjects offer historical and ethnographic interest and value, while the work of individual photographers offers insights into the way in which photography is used as a means of visual anthropology. This resource is likely to be of interest to researchers in history and literature as well as photography and anthropology. The site may be navigated by means of anchors which offer images collected under headings such as Gallery; History; Family; Found Photos; and Ethno. Discussion boards, open to all interested contributors, tackle the definitions involved, such as straight photography, and the extent to which the photographer chooses to manipulate the chosen image. Photographers whose work is featured in the Gallery collection include John Mason, Bill Wylie, Elizabeth Whelan and Sarah Wyles. Links are offered to other photography-related sites, as well as to the Fixing Shadows Literary page.
