Title : Ligatus

Description :
The Ligatus website describes the work of the Ligatus research unit (also known as The Book as Artefact) at Camberwell College of Arts, a constituent college of University of the Arts London. The unit combines the study of the history of bookbinding and conservation with research into modern data analysis and collection management tools. One of the key projects undertaken by the unit is a joint venture with the St Catherine Foundation, to study "historic bookbinding through the development of digital tools and resources with particular interest to conservation". The Holy Monastery of St Catherine in Sinai, Egypt, holds a unique collection of Byzantine manuscripts and books, and the remit of the research unit is to assess the condition of the manuscripts, offer advice about conserving them, and develop a long-term conservation strategy for them. The project is largely funded by the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine, with additional support from the Headley Trust. The website also describes two further projects: the "compilation of a definitive bilingual glossary to describe Byzantine/Greek bookbindings", which is funded through the AHRC Large Grants scheme; and the creation of the John Latham archive, funded by the AHRC and the Henry Moore Foundation. Brief summaries are also given about current MPhil and PhD student projects.
